The Mysteries of the Universe

Science is a way of knowing and thinking about the natural and physical world. From an early age, we interact with our environment, ask questions and seek ways to answer those questions. This lies at the heart of knowing and understanding science.

Science is also the basis of an innovative society and at the core of significant political decisions that we as citizens must face regarding issues such as health-care and the environment. The significance of science to our daily lives is more important than ever: choosing to consume organic or genetically modified foods; choosing products with the least impact on the environment; choosing an energy provider; making informed health-care decisions. We make science-based choices every day.

Our Approach

All students study National Curriculum Science throughout their five years at the College.  Students receive a broad, balanced science education.  We offer enrichment opportunities to all students, broadening and helping to develop scientific knowledge and understanding.

Key Stage 3

KS3 science is organised into a progression of themes and is delivered using a practical approach.  With this approach, students are able to develop their scientific knowledge and understanding through experimental and investigative work. ‘How Science Works’ is mapped throughout the key stage and is designed to match the needs of learners today and in the future. Topics studied include: Cell Biology, Forces, Particle Analysis, Energy Transfers and related fields.

Students learn about how science affects them and society. They find out about medical research, issues concerning intensive farming, how we can use alternative energy resources, how to stop diseases spreading. They also are encouraged to question the way their world works and look at the strategies scientists use to try to find the answers.

Key Stage 4

Students with an aptitude and ability for Science will be offered the chance to take Triple Science – leading to GCSEs in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.  Most other students will follow options that will lead to 2 GCSEs  made up from a variety of Twenty First Century Science GCSEs and BTEC National courses. This will ensure that students have the opportunity to study Science in a way that is suited to their needs and abilities.

The BTEC qualification focuses on practical applications of science in a modern world and is both challenging yet attainable.

Gifted and Talented students are offered an opportunity to take an additional Science GCSE in Astronomy in association with the Greenwich Observatory on Saturday mornings.

Resources

The Science department is well resourced with a wide range of specialist equipment housed in six fully equipped laboratories, the majority of which have been refitted and refurbished in the last few years.  All Science is taught by specialist teachers who are all experts in particular fields.  Staff are supported by a Senior Technician and two further technicians.

The Department also makes extensive use of ICT in teaching and delivery of Science lessons. All labs have Interactive Whiteboards and Science has the largest software library in the College.
